Starting Out

I'm on the ship! Yesterday was extremely long. Up early to catch the shuttle to the port. Got breakfast at the Hotel and rode over with Jesse, he's a drummer for one of the jazz bands on the ship. Knowing someone already has helped. Once on the ship we started training. Signed my contract and met the person I'm replacing. Then it got a bit crazy. I found out that, as Production Manager B, I act as the supervisor for all the lounges on board. There are 10, including the Pool Deck. They have bands, duos, solo acts, and events going on pretty much every night, and all day when we are at sea. (Virginia...they do Silent Disco nights...) Getting so much information at once was overwhelming, to say the least. On top of that we had our first boat drill...All crew and passengers are required to partcipate, and it only happens once...it informs everyone of what to do in case of an emergency/ if there is a need to abandon ship. I am an assistant leader for one of the Muster Stations in the Theatre, in charge of crowd control and making sure everyone is in the place. The security and safety stuff is more overwhelming than the actual job. As the day went on I saw that most of what I'll have to remember is just where everything is. There are "secret" storage spaces all over the ship, by the lounges that house Mics, amps, stands, mixers, etc...remembering what is in which one is going to be the most difficult. The security and safety stuff, on the other hand, is something I was not entirely prepared for. There's so many things on a ship that can go wrong, so many accidents that might happen...we have to know as many as possible, and what to do in the event one happens. At about 8:30 last night, while we were eating dinner at Ocean View (one of the restaurants some of the crew is able to use) the ship left port. That was kind of incredible to watch, as the shoreline started to move away. I ended yesterday around 10pm and was exhausted, I still hadn't slept more than 3.5 hours a night for the past 3 days. I walked around on the deck for a few minutes and it was calming watching the water and watching the lights of the city. Calling home was something I wasn't expecting to be able to do, but I was able to and it made my night much better. The support system I have from home is absolutely amazing! Today was long, but easier. More training this morning and this afternoon. Still a bit jetlagged, but it's getting better. I was able to take a good long walk of the ship today. Still trying to map out everything...got lost a few times yesterday, and there are A LOT of stairs. This ship is huge, and it's not even the largest of the Celebrity ships. This evening we set up for a formal event in the grand foyer, moved drapes and set up lights. During the event I met som of the senior Officers on board, including the captain. At the start of every cruise they do an Officers' Soiree, so I should get to know some of them quite well. Finished around 10 tonight, after dinner at Ocean View again. Added bonus...no roomate! I was thoroughly expecting to have at least one roomate...if not more. But I have my own room! It's a fairly crappy one, with a smoking area not far away, but in 2 weeks, when the other PSM leaves, I move down to her room, which is also a single! Alright, that's it for now. I'm off to bed, we get an extra hour tonight since we're switching time zones! Love to all.
